From time to time The Greater Nanaimo Cycling Coalition conducts Assessment Rides on the roads and routes in the Nanaimo and the Regional District. These assessment rides are to assess issues faced by people of all ages and abilities in riding bicycles on the particular route.
The group evaluates accessibility, to and from the corridor, safety concerns for cyclists, opportunities for safer cycling facilities, and possible conflicts that could arise between bicyclists and the other road users. Copious notes and comments are recorded together with pictures and drawings by the participants. The information collected are published as Assessment Ride Reports and shared with stakeholders, City Department and the RDN.
Assessment Ride Reports are tools used to inform multiple stakeholders of bicycle route issues and opportunities, from the perspective of cyclists who use the route. They are most valuable when tailored to the requirements of those stakeholders.
Assessment Rides fit into a larger scope of action and advocacy for route improvements. They are but one tool, and are best seen as a piece of the puzzle, and not as the complete answer. For that reason, it is important to plan up front what the intent of any one Assessment Ride report or formal letter is, and who the recipients will be. This will increase the effectiveness of the Assessment Ride reports and the likelihood of subsequent route improvements.
