In 2014 the GNCC approached three different City departments who were all working on a flat map of the City of Nanaimo.

We asked if they would agree to make just one map in GIS with different layers so each department could have one or more layers that addressed their needs and had their favourite features.

We just wanted a Bike Route Planning Map that was user friendly and helped people get to places by bicycle.

GNCC moved ahead and engaged a VIU student, Nic Williams, in the GIS mapping program. The city provided us with some raw data and we set out a framework. In our meetings with engineering staff we came up with some great criteria to make an outstanding bicycle planning maps. We hope the City will continue to improve on our original work and produce a series of useful readable bike route planning maps in the coming years.

Trail Habits

Share the Trail

Keep right except to pass.

Alert Others

When passing, alert others and control your speed.

Yield to Others

Cyclists yield to all other trail users. Hikers yield to equestrians.

Respect the Trail

Do not remove or disturb animals or plants, such as wildflowers.

Be Alert and Visible

Wear reflective gear and use caution at road crossings.

Pet Etiquette

Dogs must be on the right hand side of the trail. On most multi-use such as the E&N trails dogs must be leashed.

Google Map Updates

The GNCC is a keen advocate to keeping maps up to date. With that in mind our volunteers update not only our map vault but also send corrections to Google to update their Google Map data.

Cycling Route Planning Tool
Need to find the best route by bike? Check out the Cycling Route Planner, developed by a team of researchers at the University of British Columbia in cooperation with TransLink. This handy tool helps cyclists find bike routes anywhere in Metro Vancouver based on options such as designated cycling routes, distance, elevation gain and air quality. For more details, please visit UBC's Cycling in Cities website, or check out the cycling information on Google Maps.
